Our Story

Adebola Adefioye founded The Afro Women And Youth Foundation after her daughter’s experience of racism as a newcomer to Canada.

Her daughter was bullied for her skin color and Adebola encouraged her to speak up for herself.

Adebola worked with her daughter as she developed her own Self-Advocacy and Leadership skills. After 2 years, she won the Most Confident Child award in Grade 5 and in Grade 8, she won the Principal’s Award for demonstrating outstanding leadership, respect towards others and being inclusive of everyone’s uniqueness and individualism.

Adebola was inspired to extend more support to other Migrant and Black youth and women who may be experiencing racism.

Over the years with support from various collaborators, sponsors, and community partners, the Afro Women and Youth Foundation has been able to deliver programs to Black Women, Youth and Indigenous Persons in Toronto and Sudbury, Ontario.

We value lived experiences and encourage racialized individuals to share stories through our Stories4Change project.

Our vision

We envision a world where racialized women and youths of African origin will enhance self-advocacy and leadership skills, build confidence, and emerge as role models for future generations.

Our mission

The Afro Women and Youth Foundation is a Black-Led and Black-Serving organization that provides leadership, empowerment, and mentorship programs to Newcomers, Black Women and Youth. We also offer public education workshops and training on Anti-Black Racism, Gender-Based Violence, and Self-Advocacy to groups and organizations.
